What is it?

BLEA (Benefits Led Enterprise Architecture) is the process of taking a benefits led approach to Enterprise Architecture development. Benefits led Enterprise Architecture identifies opportunities to be exploited through either the current state or possible future architectures quantifying and enabling realisation of benefits.

Benefits led Enterprise Architecture is a unique information driven holistic method for making effective use of existing assets through a common approach to business process, Information systems and technology architecture development method. BLEA enables the identification, optimisation and realisation of benefits through opportunities to transition between current and future enterprise architectures.

BLEA aligns with TOGAF adding further value in that it focuses on re-use and identifying quick wins. By taking a benefits led approach to Enterprise Architecture it is possible to establish a value trail from the organisational strategic vision, drivers and principles through to detailed transition planning and programme implementation. The value of this trail is realised through benefits management and assured by benefits measurement.

BLEA process

During the architecture development process benefits are identified, developed and tracked. Benefits are identified within the strategic assessment phase and defined in more detail as the architecture development progresses in the business, applications, information, technology and security architecture.

BLEA quantities the potential benefits through the opportunities and solutions development phase. For each possible solution option, a detailed analysis of the each benefit is established. The option analysis is extended into detailed cost benefit analysis and modelling techniques.

The results of the opportunities and solutions phase provides management with a well founded ability to make business change decisions that are supported by a benefits realisation plan demonstrating benefits traceability. The value of this knowledge ensures that senior management can guarantee the benefits realisation of a selected solution, understanding what it will cost and the value of the return on investment.

BLEA further helps senior management to ensure benefits are realised by benefits tracking and measurement during the programme implementation of the chosen solution.
